Guidelines for Outdoor Play in Cold Weather: Some schools continue to keep children inside when the temperature is below 32 degrees. This is not consistent with current Health Department recommendations or current DOE policy. Children benefit from vigorous exercise and should be given the opportunity to play outside whenever possible. Unless it is snowing or there is ice on the playground, low temperatures should not be a barrier to outside play, as long as children are appropriately dressed. The Health Department strongly encourages principals to maintain outdoor play periods on the vast majority of winter days.
I agree that rigorous play is essential to our youth. Please assist us with making sure that our students have the appropriate outside clothing so that all may participate in our recess times. The decision to play outside will be made on a day-to-day basis.

Schools must report daily attendance for both remote and in-person students to DOE central office by 4:00 p.m. each day.
If a student arrives at school on days when they are scheduled for remote learning, we will inform you. All children attending on an unscheduled day will need to be picked up or will be sent home, depending on age and other factors. Students will wait in the cafeteria, seated in a socially distant way, while they wait to be picked up. You can complete a Student Returning Home for Remote Learning Permission Slip to allow your student to walk home by him/herself in these circumstances.
For students in grades 3-K–8, who are participating in blended learning, Learning Bridges is a new program that will provide free childcare options on the days when students are scheduled for remote-learning instruction. Families can express interest in the Learning Bridges program by completing the Learning Bridges family interest form.
The UFT has re-opened its Dial-A-Teacher program, a homework help line for students, run by classroom teachers. This resource is available from 4:00–7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, for students in grades K–5. Due to limitations caused by school building closures, the help line is currently only available for ELA and math homework from teachers speaking English. The UFT is hoping to expand to other subjects, grades, and languages soon. Please share this optional resource with your school community.
The City of New York’s three public library systems—Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Public Library—are providing free access to Brainfuse, which is an online tutoring platform for families and students. This resource is available seven days a week, from 2:00–11:00 p.m., and provides support to all grade levels in the following areas:
To access Brainfuse, New York State residents must sign up for a free library card in one of the three library systems. See below for information about how school communities in all five boroughs can obtain library cards at any of the three public library systems:
